Draws blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods

Technical Instruction

Ethics/Rights and HIPPA - 5 req. hrs
The student will examine the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) Privacy Rule, the first comprehensive Federal protection for the privacy of personal health information.
Organizational Skills and Time Management - 5 req. hrs
Effective time management is vital to the productive operation of a Phlebotomist. Hence, the student will be introduced to the basics of time management, including how best to perform specific clerical duties, such as taking inventory, ordering supplies, answering telephone, taking messages, filling out forms and scheduling patient appointments. The student will also be exposed to inventorying medical supplies or instruments and retrieving files or charts.
Documentation - 5 req. hrs
The student will learn how to create a digital or analog record detailing treatment, trial or test given. Documents must be accurate, timely and reflect specific services provided to a patient.
Concepts of Phlebotomy - 20 req. hrs
The student will learn basic concepts of Phlebotomy and how to be a phlebotomist.
Responsibilities of Phlebotomists - 24 req. hrs
The student will learn the roles and responsibilities of a phlebotomists and how to be effective.
Laboratory Organizational Structure - 10 req. hrs
The student will learn the structure and how laboratories function when processing specimen samples.
Major Body Systems - 10 req. hrs
The student will learn the body’s organ systems, and how the body is organized, from atoms to the entire individual. A discussion of the muscular, skeletal, nervous, and endocrine and circulatory systems will be featured.
Specimen Collection Equipment - 10 req. hrs
The student will learn the types of equipment is used to store specimen and used to draw blood.
Specimen Collection Procedures - 10 req. hrs
Prior to each collection, review the appropriate test description, including the specimen type indicated, the volume, the procedure, the collection materials, patient preparation, and storage and handling instructions. To preparing the patient you should provide the patient, in advance, with appropriate collection instructions and information on fasting, diet, and medication restrictions when indicated for the specific test. When preparing the specimen, verify the patient's identification. Proper identification of specimens is extremely important. All primary specimen containers must be labeled with two identifiers at the time of collection. Submitted slides may be labeled with a single identifier, but two identifiers are preferred. All specimens should be labeled in the presence of the patient. Process and store the specimen(s) as required. Appropriate storage and handling are necessary to maintain the integrity of the specimen and, consequently, the test results.
Communication, Customer Service, Problem-Solving - 5 req. hrs
A Phlebotomist will have to communicate with many different types of people; hence the focus will be on effective communication skills with patients.
Infection Control - 10 req. hrs
The art of safety and infection control is key to an effective healthcare employee, and particular attention will be paid to how infections spread and what can be done to break the chain of infection, including proper hand washing. Emphasis is placed on how to effectively change linens, such as bed sheets and pillowcases and clean and organize work area and disinfect equipment after treatment.
Safety/Emergency Procedures - 5 req. hrs
The student will examine the Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) to learn about the use of hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, medical services and first aid, fire protection as well as toxic/hazardous substances.
Specimen Transport & Processing - 15 req. hrs
The student will learn how to transport specimen to laboratories for testing and how to give/read results.
